The Second Annual French-American Science Festival will be taking place under the theme of “Sustainable Development and Sustainable Energy for All”. That is why the Scientific Office of the French Consulate of Chicago decided to launch an international project in science outreach examining sustainable management of water and waste in the world, two major global issues of the 21st century. The goal of this project is to induce dialogue between students and the audience toward those two issues during the Science Festival. The project aims also to expand the debate between experts by showing a new light on these challenges, especially regarding science mediation.
La fête de la Science Franco-Américaine a cette année pour thème "Développement durable et Énergie Durable pour tous", 2012 étant l'année de l’énergie durable pour tous. Dans le cadre de ce festival, nous avons souhaité mettre sur pied un projet international de médiation scientifique portant sur la gestion durable de l'eau et des déchets, deux enjeux globaux majeurs de ce début du siècle. Ce projet de coopération international s’est matérialisé par la réalisation d'un documentaire d'une vingtaine de minutes qui sera projeté durant le Festival.
Ce film, réalisé par des élèves de trois pays différents (l’inde, la France et les Etats-Unis), permettra de balayer les principales problématiques actuelles liées à la gestion des ressources en eau, inscrivant les enjeux locaux spécifiques à chaque pays, dans un cadre mondial plus global, mettant en lumière les dernières avancées en matière d’innovation et de programmes coopératifs. Ces classes, qui sont suivies par une institution scientifique de référence dans le domaine étudié, donnent à leurs élèves âgés de 8 à 16 ans, l’opportunité de développer leur esprit critique, à travers l’observation de ses enjeux au sein de leur quotidien.
L’objectif du projet est ainsi, non seulement de susciter un questionnement sur ces enjeux chez les élèves et le public mais aussi de permettre d’alimenter le débat des professionnels en apportant différents éclairages et solutions à ces nouveaux défis dans le cadre de la médiation scientifique. La problématique du projet est la suivante : nous partageons tous la même planète, comment gérer nos ressources en eau et nos déchets afin que chacun puisse y vivre dans de bonnes conditions? 7 équipes d’étudiants à travers le monde ont ainsi travaillé sur le projet. Libre de la direction artistique à adopter et de la façon de traiter son sujet, chacune d’elle est chargée de réaliser un court métrage d’une douzaine de minutes sur un des deux enjeux.
The main idea of this project is that we all share the same planet. How then should we manage our waste and water resources so that everyone’s living needs of the present can be met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs? The project is captured in twelve-minute films directed by student groups from Chicago, France, and India. The students were given the liberty of their own artistic direction and freedom to treat the subject as they saw fit. Their research has allowed the students to discover the emerging concerns of water and waste management by examining issues specific to their location and gain understanding of them within a global context. This will shed light on the recent advancements in innovation and cooperative programs.
A synthesis of three films on water management made by student teams from Milwaukee, (U.S.), Landerneau, (France), and Bangalore, (India), will be presented as an introduction to the workshop on the theme of “International Science Out-reach Programs for Global Sustainable Issues.” At the end of the film, there will be a short discussion moderated by Dr. Silvania Sousa do Nacimiento of the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil.
